Aquaponics & How it Works – Layman’s Version

Basic Concept

Aquaponics is a food production system based upon mother-nature’s own method of recycling fish waste by feeding it to plants. In a nutshell, that’s the bare-bones definition. You should also know it is highly adaptable to home-based use, is low maintenance, produces very high amount of food/area (food density), and requires very little external inputs.

How it Works – Layman’s Version

Live fish are grown in a tank. Tank water, which contains fish waste, is pumped from the tank to grow-beds. Grow beds are simple containers filled with gravel and which have plants planted in them on top. Gravel in the grow beds will naturally come to host bacterial colonies which will convert fish waste into plant food. Plants consume the food, water is returned to the fish tank via gravity, and you get to eat organically grown fruits, vegetables, and fish. The fish are happy because their water is kept clean. The plants are happy and grow quickly because they are receiving nutrients 24/7, and you should be happy and healthy having access to home-grown, organically produced food. The only external inputs to the system are electricity and fish food – however even the fish food can be system-grown.

How it Works – Detailed Explanation

You need not understand anything more than the layman’s explanation above in order to get started with Aquaponics. However, a little more knowledge certainly doesn’t hurt and will help you understand how the system works.

Aquaponics takes advantage of mother-nature’s own methods to convert fish waste into plant food. At the heart of this system is what is commonly referred to as the Nitrogen Cycle.

Nitrogen is an essential element necessary for life on Earth as we know it. The Nitrogen Cycle is a series of chemical processes whereby nitrogen from the environment is consumed by living organisms and processed into various different nitrogen-based chemical forms. This is accomplished via a chain of living organisms, each utilizing nitrogen in some way to live, and converting it into another nitrogen-based chemical structure which is then needed by another organism. In this way, nitrogen is continually cycled from the environment, through the biological system, and back into the environment.

Updates and New Information

I don’t update that frequently as I like to be careful with information I post. Folks might rely on my posts for their lives, and the lives of their families, so I put myself in their shoes, and handle posting with responsibility to get info that’s as accurate as I can possibly get and be sure of.

On to the fun stuff…

Now, this is something Husband and I have been experimenting with for a while, and while our work is somewhat experimental in reegards to seeking improvements, the basics plan works and works well enough.

Aquaponics gardening is a growing trend that allows families to create a self-sustaining environment that grows vegetables, fruits, flowers and more with as little maintenance as possible.

The first time I was told about aquaponics gardening, I thought it was going to be very dirty and moldy but was pleasantly surprised to find that it wasn’t like that at all. Aquaponics gardens can be as small or as large as you’d like it to be. They create enough food in a small space and require very little maintenance.

Aquaponics is a cultivation of fish and plants together in a constructed, recirculating ecosystem utilizing natural bacterial cycles to convert fish waste to plant nutrients. This is an environmentally friendly, natural food-growing method that harnesses the best attributes of aquaculture and hydroponics without the need to discard any water or filtrate or add chemical fertilizers.

There’s lush green lettuce, plump tomatoes and fragrant basil all growing in a bed of water in a 2, 000-sq-ft (about 186 square meters) greenhouse in Toronto, the largest city of Canada.

It’s all part of a pilot project an urban farmer is hoping will help showcase the benefits of a waste-free system which combines aquaculture and hydroponics. He’s hoping the large-scale commercial aquaponics farm he built nearly two months ago will help persuade others into making the switch from conventional farming.

But for millions of us, especially if we live in the city, in an apartment or a condo with a patio, or a home on a postage stamp sized lot-which is what even single family homes seem to all be built on these days, how do you supplement your purchased groceries with home grown? With a little creativity, it is possible.

WATER is a survival priority. In fact, generally we cannot survive much longer than 3 days without it. A very small number of people have been known to survive for up to a week without water under special circumstances, but this has been a rare exception.

Knowing this, one would think that WATER is a top priority for most preppers. Unfortunately, it often is not. It is often overlooked because most of us have such ready access to it nearly everywhere we go. It comes out of our faucet, we can buy it in stores, it’s in lakes, rivers and streams, and it rains (in most places)…

Stop to think about it though, because there are situations where your access to fresh clean drinking water could diminish or disappear.

Meet The First Native Nations

I’ve been speaking about them for a while, but saying Little (as per the expressed wishes of the Council) but I can now open the purse strings a bit more about information. Husband is FNN, as am I, but there are serious limits of information we possess for obvious reasons of security and I am just fine with that arrangement…what I do not know, I can not accidentally betray.

1; The First Native Nations was founded immediately after WW2 by 13 Veterans from assorted Nations from USA and Canada.

2; The FNN takes as it’s Charter the collected documents together referred to as The American Constitution. The reason for such is that in those documents are time proven Truth that relate to all people. However, during any hostilities, the FNN will NOT extend it’s protections to enemies with an intent Contrary to The Constitution.

3; The FNN is media-apathetic. I am IT and all there is as far their ‘media presence’ goes. This comes from decades and decades of Native American concerns being unheard, or just dismissed without discussion. The FNN has NO interest in media, but does monitor it all closely. Also, they have seen how a ‘media presence’ really can get in the way, and for that point also keep media involvement absolutely minimized.

4; The FNN is absolutely and Determinedly anti-Leftist. Founded by Veterans, they SAW what Leftism did in the form of Hitler, and the later Democides of Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, etc.. They KNOW very well, as has been Proven, that Leftism inevitably leads to the deaths of Millions via Democide. Before that, Leftist appeasers led the world into WW2, and there’s also that bit about how the Democratic Party of the USA is intimately connected with KKK.This is also a key reason why the Constitution is also the FNN’s Charter.

5; The FNN’s Major focus is on the Preservation, Protection and ‘re-kindling’ of the cultures of The Nations of The First Peoples. UNLIKE AIM, the FNN operates largely Anonymously to fund, encourage, and remove obstacles to such. They do not ‘pimp’ Native culture. They are Traditionalists, but also keenly mindful of the modern world and the realities within it.

6; The FNN is not ‘Militant’, but possess ParaMilitary/Militia aspects. They are such as the Sword & Shield of The Nations vs ANY future attempts to harm, damage, destroy, exterminate the cultures or peoples of The Nations. We, The People of The Nations have LEARNED what happens when we trust ‘government’, and will NOT trust ‘government’ with the safety of what very precious little remains of our Traditional Culture, especially the safety of our children in whom are our Hopes for the future as the People of The Nations.
And needless to say, our trust in ‘government’ has been even further eroded in light of recent land-thefts/treaty violations by obama’s admin.
The FNN does not, and will not engage in terrorist actions vs. Civilians. There are in fact very gravely-deterring penalties for such in the FNN. It is NOT done, it is NOT tolerated. That said, the FNN council are the Final deciders of who is listed as terrorists in the perception of the FNN, and while some remove Boko Haram and Hamas from their lists of terror organizations, the FNN will not do so as at minimum such are criminal organizations of extremely vicious nature with no regard for Human life.

7; The FNN is also very focussed on Sovereignty for the Nations, and intends to accomplish this via energy http://blackwinterenergy.blogspot.ca/2013/07/backwinter-system-diagram-open-source.html and Infrastructure projects to improve quality of life for those on Treaty lands/Reservations, along a principle of Sustainability and Self-Sufficiency. Including our OWN banks, backed by precious metals so that any deposits made ARE suddenly something Real, and not just cheap paper backed by nothing except digital code, however a way of tying the proposed Banks to Digital Currency is being developed. The convenience of D-Currency, with the solid security of genuine Backing.
The FNN is also entering the world’s Diplomatic networks, slowly, with small and cautious steps, this is something that the People Of The Nations should have done long ago, and a step that is necessary as Native Americans have earned the right to a voice in International dealings and goings-on and possess that right innately as a Bona Fide indigenous People.
Perhaps we will even mint our own coins, passports, and related documents.

8; The FNN is in NO way affiliated with the criminals and criminality of AIM, and never will be. AIM has done as much, or more, harm to The Peoples Of The Nations than the time of our being pushed to extinction. There is ample proof to support such claims. AIM has engaged in assaults ve. unarmed people and other actions that could be called ‘terrorism’, and AIM’s history of such forever means that it will never be viewed as anything but inimical and with great suspicion by the FNN.

Who We are. Who We Can be. Who We Will be.

From the Lakota Nation…

The full legend is here:

http://www.ya-native.com/Culture_GreatPlains/legends/TheLegendoftheChanunpa.html

The White Buffalo Calf Woman then spoke to the women, telling them that it was the work of their hands and the fruit of their bodies which kept the people alive. “You are from Mother Earth,” she told them. “What you are doing is as great as what the warriors do.”

And therefore the sacred pipe is also something that binds men and women together in a circle of love. It is the one holy object in the making of which both men and women have a hand.

The men carve the bowl and make the stem; the women decorate it with bands of colored porcupine quills. When a man takes a wife, they both hold the pipe at the same time and red trade cloth is wound around their hands, thus tying them together for life.

The White Buffalo Calf Woman also talked to the children, because they have an understanding beyond their years. She told them that what their fathers and mothers did was for them, that their parents could remember being little once, and that they, the children, would grow up to have little ones of their own.

She told them: “You are the coming generation, that’s why you are the most important and precious ones. Some day you will hold this pipe and smoke it. Some day you will pray with it.”

She spoke once more to all the people: “The pipe is alive; it is a red being showing you a red life and a red road. And this is the first ceremony for which you will use the pipe. You will use it to keep the soul of a dead person, because through it you can talk to Wakan Tanka, the Great Mysterious. The day a human dies is always a sacred day. The day when the soul is released to the Great Spirit is another.”

She spoke one last time to Standing Hollow Horn, the chief, saying, “Remember: this pipe is very sacred. Respect it and it will take you to the end of the road. The four ages of creation are in me. I will come to see you in every generation cycle. I shall come back to you.”

The sacred woman then took leave of the people, saying: “Toksha ake wacinyanktin ktelo — I shall see you again.”

The people saw her walking off in the same direction from which she had come, outlined against the red ball of the setting sun. As she went, she stopped and rolled over four times. The first time, she turned into a black buffalo; the second into a brown one; the third into a red one; and finally, the fourth time she rolled over, she turned into a white buffalo calf. A white buffalo is the most sacred living thing you could ever encounter.

The White Buffalo Calf Woman disappeared over the horizon. As soon as she had vanished, buffalo in great herds appeared, allowing themselves to be killed so that the people might survive. And from that day on, our relations, the buffalo, furnished the people with everything they need — meat for their food, skins for their clothes and tipi1s, and bones for their many tools.

The following is a small portion I have transcribed from a recording of a Talk given by Thomas Two Crows Redhand the other night. He is one of two still-living Founders of The First Native Nations and like the others of The Original Thirteen a WW2 Veteran.

Once, we were Many Bands. Many Nations. Many Tribes. We were like fires in the night, apart, but same. Then came the Invasion of our lands. I do not speak of this but as fact, and denounce those who whine like ill-raised children who do not know how to behave.

I speak now of the past to illustrate our history Past and our Looking-Ahead.

When you take a club to a fire, to try to beat it out, what happens? You eventually put out the fire in a clumsy manner…so you think.

Sparks, cinders, embers get scattered…smoldering away from the fire. Small, but alive, carrying the essence of the fire they came from. They can kindle themselves, grow larger, spread and become small fires that join to their cousins…

Then, you have a fire too large to beat out.

This is who we we were. This is what happened to us. This is what we are becoming. The Time of Tears is closing, and this is The Time of Changes. This is a new dawn for the Peoples of The First Native Nations. But we must be strong, honest, mindful of past, present, and future all at once. Our children we must treat and raise as strong ones, to stand tall and straight so they will keep our people and our ways alive after we are gone from this life, as will their children and on into our new future.

Women, you are the carriers of life and it is you who shape the future the most, we look to you in shared hope of the future for us all that you will find the strength and ways of your ancestors and Woman-Wisdom that has been the support of all people of the First Native Nations from time long before remembering and will be again into the future.

More will come as I have time and Permissions from Thomas.

Obama: Iran Can Be ‘Very Successful Regional Power’

President mistakenly calls Tehran a ‘country.’

8:01 AM, Dec 29, 2014 • By DANIEL HALPER WEEKLYSTANDARD.COM

President Obama made a gaffe in an interview with NPR when he called Tehran a “country.” But the gaffe isn’t the news from the interview at all.

Instead, expect people to focus on Obama talking about Iran having a “path” to being “a very successful regional power.”

“[W]hen I came into office, the world was divided and Iran was in the driver’s seat. Now the world’s united because of the actions we’ve taken, and Iran’s the one that’s isolated,” Obama told NPR.

“They have a path to break through that isolation and they should seize it. Because if they do, there’s incredible talent and resources and sophistication inside of — inside of Iran, and it would be a very successful regional power that was also abiding by international norms and international rules, and that would be good for everybody. That would be good for the United States, that would be good for the region, and most of all, it would be good for the Iranian people.”

In the same interview, President Obama acknowledges that Iran sponsors terrorism and wants a nuclear bomb.
